If you are traveling to Baguio City this summer, it’s always a plus to make a pit stop in Manaoag Pangasinan. Oh, yes. Pangasinan is a vast province here in Northern Luzon. There’s just so much to go – the Hundred Islands off the Gulf of Lingayen in Alaminos City, Bolinao beach to name a few.

So why stopping at Manaoag? Manaoag is an inland town east of Pangasinan. It is the home of Our Lady of Rosary of Manaoag (Birhen ng Rosaryo ng Manaoag). Her miraculous powers and intercessions made her one of the most venerated Marian images of our country. Hence, devotees and tourists alike flock to this small Pangasinan town.

The church’s facade is not that opulent.

But inside, the Patroness stood prominently atop the altar. It was saturday morning when we arrived at the church, there was an English mass held. The church was filled with people. We stood to hear the mass and I was so swayed I didn’t bother to use my camera inside.

Here’s the garden facing the church. The lower part used to be the entrance and a small parking space. However, due to volume of visitors, the gate/parking area was closed. There are 2 entrances on the two roads beside the church’s compound. And, there’s ample parking space and tables in shaded trees which visitors can rest or eat. Entrance is free.

After the mass, we stayed awhile, one would be surprised as to the throngs of people coming and going to the area.

For those visiting Manaoag, please try to buy candles here at the church’s small candle store. As is common with Catholic churches, visitors come for free. However with every candle you buy, you helped maintain the church. As we believe the parish this big with many visitors coming almost daily have staff that does the cleaning and security personnel in the whole area.

After mass and a refreshment in the church’s garden, we scamper around just outside the church to look for this popular Pangasinan delicacy, TUPIG. @ twenty pesos for 5 pieces, you’ll surely ask for more. This native rice cake is made of glutinous rice and coconut strips wrapped in banana leaves and cooked over charcoal. Hot and delicious!

There are more pasalubong items (food and non-food items) to be bought outside the church. They come cheap! We’re quite heavy with eating and after our pit stop, I, surely will be needing omega 3 fatty acid supplements!

Never missed this chance to visit Manaoag town en route to your travel to Baguio City.
